The Valéncia Chorale, under the direction of Patrick O’Shea, will premiere two new choral arrangements on their April 16, 2020 concert: “Winona, People and Place” at the Chapel of Saint Mary of the Angels in Winona, Minnesota. The community choir, formed in 2019, will consider the various people who have made this part of the Upper Mississippi their home.
The program opens with a choral arrangement of George Coburn’s song, “Winona,” composed in 1916. This solo song was written from the Chicago native’s impression of Winona in the early 20th century. Coburn had come to serve as the founding director of the Winona Municipal Band, and stayed three years in the city.
the program will also includes a new arrangement of “Old Colonial Times,” published as a three-part piece in the 1840s in Boston, telling the tale of three colonial-era rogues who meet an unfortunate fate. The new arrangement expands the setting to four parts and adds a piano accompaniment.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Winona Fine Arts Commission, the concert will be free of charge.
